CNC Certification Requirements

This post is in the process of being rewritten for the new FS Router that was installed on September 30th.

The new article will detail a path for certification of new users and re-certification of existing Ace Certified Users.

As of 2020 there is no longer a path to bypass the CNC class.

Ace members can bypass a certification class if they demonstrate knowledge of the following topics:

  • Gcode – what it is, general understanding.  Writing GCode is not required.
  • Bits
    • End mills vs. drill bits
    • Types of end mills (ball nose, flat, compresssion, upcut, center cutting, etc)
    • End mill size (length & width) advantages and disadvantages
  • Feeds and Speeds
    • Explain what it means
    • Impact of 3 of flutes, RPM, surface speed etc…)
  • Cutting parameters
    • Stepover, stepdown, conventional vs climb milling
  • Fire safety
    • Cause, identification, remediation
  • Mach 4
    • Setting references, soft limits
    • Basic movement
  • Securing Material
    • Why brass is good
    • How to use the plastic nail gun
  • Setup and teardown and cleanup
