About Certification Requirements

Certain tools at AMT require certification to use. In general, these are tools that are more likely to injure you out be damaged by misuse. Users must be certified on the planer (AMT354) to use the drum sander as they both have similar risks of kickback.

Certification does not necessarily provide all information needed to use the tool in all manners consistent with its intended use, nor does it replace or reduce the obligation of the user to independently read the manual and to understand and use the tool safely. Lack of certification requirements does not imply a tool is safe to use without training—the lathe and router table, for example, can do a great deal of damage if misused but we do not yet have training developed. Individual help is available for those tools upon request.

Some tools have associated risks that may not be obvious. If you are ever unsure about something, please ask—many members, including the shop stewards, are more than happy to help you.

What Does a Drum Sander Do?

This tool is used for fine surfacing or sanding wood, especially figured woods that tear out under planer blades. Unlike a thickness planar, the drum sander is not intended for removing large amounts of wood.

Notes Regarding Use

  • Unlike our jointer and planer, wood composites and builds containing end grain, glue or epoxy can be put through this machine, creating a flat finished surface.
  • Because of the potential for kickback, ensure that the area behind the feed side is clear. Do not allow people to walk past it while the drum sander is in operation. It is best to turn the machine so the feed side faces a wall.
  • Always use dust collection when operating the drum sander.
  • There are jigs stored with the machine that can be used to cut bulk sandpaper with the proper taper for the drum.

Drum Sander Adjustments

The drum sander has two primary means of adjustment (i) raise/lower handwheel and (ii) variable speed control knob (see manual).

The raise/lower handwheel is used to adjust the height of the drum sander to fit the thickness of the stock being sanded. To set the appropriate height, begin with the wheel set higher than your stock. Run your stock through the drum sander — it should not sand your stock to start — and slowly turn the wheel clockwise until the height matches your stock.  Turn the wheel 1/4 turn between passes.

The variable speed control knob adjusts the rate at which your stock runs through the drum sander.

Changing sandpaper in the Drum Sander

Ace does not provide Sandpaper. We do sell sandpaper rolls in the Honor Store or your can purchase at Rockler.
