All About Thread

This post aims to answer various questions about thread in the Textile Studio.

When can I use Ace provided thread and when should I bring my own thread?

  • Ace provides thread for small projects and classes.
  • If you are doing a “large” project or you want a specific thread color, please bring your own thread.
    • Large projects are things like quilts, entire garments or anything that requires more than an hour or two of sewing.
  • Thread is expensive. If you are doing a large project please bring your own thread or donate $ using the cash or scan code. If you need a specific color, it would be better to bring your own thread. We can’t commit to having all the colors all the time.

How is the thread wall organized?

  • Ace uses Gutermann Sew-All thread. Please do not put other types of thread on the thread wall.
  • The thread is generally organized by color. Please try to put the thread back where you got it, near similar colors.
  • Bobbins with matching thread should be put directly below that spool of thread. Please use the handy dandy bobbin closers to keep thread from hanging all over the place.
  • There is a small amount of top stitch thread to the lower right of the thread wall. You’ll notice that there are no bobbins with top stitch thread – that is because you should NOT put this thread into a bobbin.

Annotated photo of how the thread wall is organized

  • Serger thread and heavy duty threads are in bins below the regular sewing threads.
  • Cotton thread, some specialty threads and spools with very small amounts of thread are in the Notions bin under the cutting tables. These are great for hand sewing and other projects. These were donations and won’t be actively replaced.

Can I use other types of thread and bobbins with Ace’s Janome HD-3000 machines?

  • You are not limited to using Gutermann Sew-All but keep in mind that the HD-3000 is optimized to 40-50 wt thread. We recommend checking the manual or doing research if you want to use lighter or heavier weight threads – and, always test on scrap fabric before sewing on your project.
  • The HD-3000s use Janome or class 15 bobbins. If you bring your own thread, you can bring your own bobbin or purchase bobbins at Ace. Please do not leave bobbins with anything other than Gutermann Sew-All on the thread wall.

Can I donate thread to Ace?

  • Please talk to team textiles before you donate thread. Please don’t take it personally if we don’t accept it. We are just trying to keep the textiles studio organized.
