The laser bed “bug”

TL;DR – If this happens to you

  1. Lower the bed 30mm
  2. Reset the Z-axis using the Menu system on the control panel

There is a software bug in the control panel that occasionally prevents the bed from moving up when you push the Z+ button. This is a really tricky scenario to re-create, and it isn’t consistent at all.

Here’s how it usually work (fails) for me:

  • I start to focus on 3mm or 6mm plywood, for etching
  • I discover I have gone too far down, I move the head away from my material and push the Z+ button
  • Nothing happens
  • I double check that I’m not crazy (after all, I just did a successful Z-reset minutes ago!)
  • Z+ still does nothing
  • I realize that the bed “bug” has struck again
  • I hold down Z- and let the bed drop down about 30mm
  • Now I can move the bed all the way back up to zero and re-start my focus

So, it’s weird to experience, but super easy to get past: using the Z- button, drop the bed about 30mm and this somehow tricks or resets the controller and allows you to move the bed back up to where you really wanted it to be.

We really hope to get this fixed by LaserObject, but obviously, not being able to re-create it every time makes that more complicated than it should be.
