Workshop Storage for Members

The etiquette and situation with lumber and workshop project storage is complex but the policy is the same everywhere at ace. There are several designated Basic Member Storage areas in the Workshop:

  • Scrappy/Horizontal Lumber Storage
  • Sheet Goods Storage

There is additional Storage In Suite #113 for Project Storage as well as a flex Area for Glue Ups and Finishing. There is very specific etiquette in that room and you can read about it on the post for that room.

Scrappy/Horizontal Lumber Storage

  • This rack is for lumber only. No other items can be stored here.
  • The horizontal lumber rack shown below is for dimensional lumber storage – AKA boards. Boards must be big enough to fit over at least two of the supports at once.
  • Piles of small bits of wood are NOT safe to store here.
  • DO NOT Bundle your pile of wood to fit between the supports in piles.
  • Other goods must be able to stack on top
  • Untagged materials in this area are available for member use.
  • NO small stacks of project wood bundled up with boards. Yes, this means your project may end up stored in two locations. Use project storage in 113 for small bits of wood.
  • Your goods may not have nails and other hardware poking out
  • All goods must fit all the way in the rack, excessive poking out is not okay
  • All goods must be tagged
  • Untagged goods are considered fair use for everyone
  • Be mindful not to overload the rack. If you have a lot of weight to put up please consider using project storage
  • Be considerate about how much storage you use for longer periods of time. For example: Using 20% of the storage for 2-3 weeks while you build something is okay. Using 20% of the storage for several months or more, not okay.

About Scrappy

  • There is a rolling scrap bin.
  • All scrap is considered fair use for everyone
  • Don’t throw your trash in there
  • No waste board

Do not put any of these in Scrappy:

  • Offcuts less than 12″ long
  • Thin wood less than 1/4″ thick
  • Endgrain slices
  • Any piece too small to work with power tools
  • Wood with obvious defects, splits, damage
  • Any wood that would have to be surfaced on all four sides to be useful
  • Any piece where there is already a few similar pieces in scrappy
  • Lots of the same size little pieces

Scrappy is not a trash bin. Do not use Scrappy as an excuse to avoid taking your trash home. Scrappy is only for readily useful wood.  Consider not putting more wood in than you take out and use.

Sheet Good Storage

  • Sheet goods storage is in the 4 left-hand slots of the rack shown below
  • Untagged materials in this area are available for member use.
  • Your goods may not have nails and other hardware poking out
  • All goods must fit all the way in the rack, excessive poking out is not okay.
  • All goods must be tagged
  • Untagged goods are considered fair use for everyone
  • Be considerate about how much storage you use for longer periods of time. For example: Using 20% of the storage for 2-3 weeks while you build something is okay. Using 20% of the storage for several months or more, not okay. A good way to think of it is only have stuff at Ace for your active projects, not your general stash of materials.
  • There are two bays available for rent in the sheet good rack. They are the two farthest to the right. Learn more here.
