Town Hall 3rd May Summary

Questions

Concerns

Ideas for what it looks lie to reopen

  • Change higher contact situations into lower contact situations
  • How to do this without a lot of onsite management
  • What are ideas that are low barrier to entry

Concern: number of people in the rooms

  • Propose to use dibs for the space, signs in rooms with capacity limits
  • Something fair for people coming from far away
  • Do we need to move to spreadsheet versus dibs, or some other visual calendar. Can we have a more visual dibs system?
  • Have people check in / check out in slack , so people can see how many currently in room (what if people forget)
  • Can we avoid people just not walking in
  • Should we put a time block on rooms/spaces
  • Are there people with a backlog of projects waiting to work – will it be very crowded when we reopen?

Concern: we lost 30% of membership revenue in April

Should we look into the hourly fee schedule for more spaces than laser? pay to play model?

  • Probably too much management overhead

How do we certify people?

Do we pause on new certifications for a while?

1st step is reopening will be for heavy users, people already certified on tools, with backlog of work

Idea: other revenue sources:

  • Should we look into streaming video equipment that we can loan out? to people interested in hosting their own classes from home
  • Can we set up spaces in AMT for better streaming so instructors can easily host
  • Offer something like a spray booth? would this be a good new offering/use of the space.
  • If it was easy and AMT had infrastructure (accounts) and equipment for good virtual classes, would instructors be interested in that?
    • Damp rabbit – probably 2/3 of class already in co-working only 1/3 in CNC shop.
    • CC – hard for textiles, if the instructor doesn’t have the same project setup. maybe instead focus on top questions. have sewing class that is just samples.
  • Can we record/archive and charge for that?
    • Content owners own it
    • Hard to make money off it, just good free advertising for AMT
  • Overall – this time is a chance for reviewing how robust our offerings are and getting a better catalog together. Before we were very ad hoc, maybe after we need to define more content in advance.

Question: what is the relationship with AMT and making PPE

  • Should we be going after grants and continuing PPE programs.
  • Is it a revenue source?
  • Maybe we could continue the PPE program with a steward. too much for Rachel to continue to drive at her current pace.
  • PPE fundraising has paid for labor and skilled labor. good opportunity for some people
  • This group might be too small to get enough feedback

Has there been rent reduction from the facility owner?

  • Governance is looking into asking landlord
  • There may be provisions for non-profits, we aren’t pursuing those yet

Discussed changing AMT name

  • Most people on call ok with that

From chat suggestions

  • Cat Factory
  • Hack Factory
  • Oakland makers terrace
  • Associated makers
  • Oakland makers
  • Oakland makers community
  • Oakland Makerspace

Between now and opening, have an opportunity to look at what we have, if we need it, what else we need before opening

  • Do we need more 3d printers?
  • Should we convert co-working to PPE production or class streaming?
  • Cleaners twice a month?
  • Which guidelines on sanitation to follow

Should we re-hold this meeting? would anyone more show up?

Hold virtual micro-conference for other bay area maker spaces to discuss challenges, ideas
