How to do a smoke test

OUT OF DATE. This was applicable when we were using the ventilation through Clean Fab. This is no longer applicable as we are on a different exhaust.

So all testing of home-brew systems like our laser ventilation are going to take some critical thinking and problem-solving. This works best with two people. One to hang out in Clean Fab and one to cut. This takes about an hour.

Prework

Before you turn the laser on do the following things:

  1. Go to Clean Fab and turn on the exhaust fan. Check to be sure that the louvers open all the way and you can see the grate on the fan clearly.
  2. Check the Honeywell air filters and service them (clean the pre-filters), change the filter if needed. Assets AMT055 and AMT037. Take a photo of the filters for later comparison.

Cutting and Evaluations

Cut and check #1

  1. Do a 4 min. cut/etch with wood and check upstairs for excessive smoke
  2. Go to check #2 if the smoke is not backing up into the room

Cut and check #2

  1. Do a 5 min. cut/etch  with MDF or similar and check upstairs for excessive smoke
  2. Go to check #3 if the load upstairs is still not gross

Tip. If you have a laser pointer turn off the lights and point it near the louvers, if smoke is leaking into the room you will see it.

Cut and check #3

  1. Do a 3 min. cut/etch with acrylic, waiting the extra time to let it vent properly
  2. Go to check #3 if the load upstairs is still not gross

Results

Check the prefilters on the honeywells. Document the differences. If you get through all three checks then we are good to go. If not then, we still need work to do.
