What they are for
These are kinetic message deliverers. They are a set of plush stuffed animals that have been sewn to stands that hold messages of great importance for members and space users. Things like:
- Machine configuration changes
- Use policy changes
- Warning about safety
- Really good news
How they work
Folks give it a message and then place it on a tool or area in such a way as a user much touch the unicorn in order to use the tool or area.
Members ALWAYS need to put the unicorn back where they found it after using the tool or area
How to make one
- Step one is to get your unicorn. As of 12/28/19, there are two in coworking that needs work.
- Next, you need to make a base scrap wood. This can be done with a drill and saw or with a laser cutter. It should have:
- Holes so you can sew the unicorn to the stand
- Etched wells for neodymium magnets
- An attachment point to hold a LTR size sign. Modified dowels are nice
- Assemble the base and sign holder. We recommend wood glue and e6000 for the magnets. Paint if desired. We have glitter.
- Glue a piece of soft fabric on the bottom over the magnets. This protects tools from getting scratched up.
Are there magnets for this project sequestered somewhere, and if so where do I find them and what dimension and depth are they? (Size question, in event I need to create well/wells? before I have access to the magnets). Thank you.
the magnets we have are 15 x 2 mm disks. When I laser etch wells for them I usually etch a 3mm deep well with a 15.3 diameter to allow room for the e6000 glue.
though they don’t have to be flush as long as we glue a soft cloth over them.
