Cross Vise Basic Rules

  • The vise must be securely attached to the drill press table before use.
  • Do not tilt the drill press table: clamp your workpiece at an angle in the cross vise instead
  • Move the drill press table and/or your workpiece to bring the drill target location within the adjustable area of the cross vise
  • You can attach either of the large wooden clamping tables with sacrificial center square to the cross vise so you can clamp to the wooden table but still adjust the position with the cross-vise
  • Don’t move the vise when the bit is in contact with the wood or inside a drilled hole
  • DO NOT DRILL INTO THE CROSS VISE!

Tips

  • Use an awl to make a circular divot where the hole will be drilled to guide the bit
  • Make sure the workpiece is well-clamped

What Does a Cross Vise Do?

A cross vise allows you to clamp your workpiece and then adjust the position where the drill press will drill a hole.  You rotate the adjusters to move the vise around within its range of adjustability.  You can move it by very small amounts.

The advantage is that you do not have to repeatedly loosen and tighten clamps to adjust the exact position where the drill press will drill a hole.

Maintenance

Refer to list, perform items as indicated by inspection:

  • Dry-lube adjuster bearing surfaces and sliding surfaces
  • Clean jaws to remove accumulated sap or glue or finish
  • Make sure adjusters work smoothly
