Ace Makerspace has a set of tools for small resin casting. This post goes over what we have and the Member Use Guidelines for using them at Ace.
These tools can be used with 2-part or UV Resin and with Ace’s collection of silicone molds. These tools are most often used with small silicon molds designed for jewelry and similar small to medium objects. All of these tools are located upstairs in suite #214 aka Clean Fab, in the Art area. Look for the hot pink “Member Use” labels and the box labeled Resin Casting Tools.
Available Supplies
- Small tools (toothpicks, tweezers, makeup brushes, plastic mixing cups, droppers, etc.)
- UV flashlights for curing UV Resin
- Blue tarp (in the Art Hot Desk Drawer)
- Silicon Molds – Please see the Silicon Mold wiki for how to use and clean the Ace shared molds.
- Donated resin may be available but Ace does not provide resin
- We also have curing racks that have dust covers so bits don’t mess up your resin projects
Basic Use Guidelines
- Always clean the resin tools after use with isoproply alcohol and paper towels until any sticky residue is cleaned off. It is okay to put these paper towels in the trash.
- Do NOT put large cups (over 8 oz.) of resin into the trash. Set them aside to cure before disposing of the.
- Do NOT medium or large amounts of 2-part resin in disposable meltable cups. The chemical process of 2-part resin epoxy generates a lot of heat and will start melting through things like solo cups and so on.
- Do NOT pour resin down the drain
- If your project is too large to fit on the Art Curing racks, please review our policy for Deep Pour resin epoxy projects.
- Leave it better than you found it
