Instructions
Local setup
We have a cable modem downstairs that feeds into an Apple wifi router at 192.168.162.1, which provides DHCP and 802.11N(G,C) wireless internet for the space. In the closet are a bunch of Ethernet hookups that go to various places in the space. One of them goes to a second Apple wifi router upstairs at 192.168.162.2, which provides 802.11N(G,C) wifi as a roaming bridge. This effectively means that depending on where you are in the space, you will automatically switch to whichever access point has the better signal. The wifi and the wired networks are all tied together, so all networked devices should be accessible from all others.
Static addresses
If you need a static address assignment for a given subnet, use the following procedure:
- Claim the address by editing the address table and save your changes immediately.
- Verify the address isn’t really taken by pinging it. If it is taken, ask for help.
- If the address is not used, it’s yours!
If there aren’t any addresses left in a static block and you know an existing allocation is obsolete, unused, or abandoned, talk to the contact for the allocation to verify it’s unused and if so, take over the allocation.
Try to take over the oldest expired allocations first. You can determine the age of an allocation by looking at the edit history for this page.
AMTANA Table 2 / AMT Inventory
[[AMTANA|AMTANA]] table 2 IDs (A0###) are for Ace Monster Toys property. If you need a static allocation for a device which is not AMT property, you do not need an AMTANA T2 allocation. Simply record the hostname or other durable identifier for the device instead.
Problems
Internet is slow
First, check the [http://a010.local/cgi-bin/smokeping.cgi local smokeping] for current statistics to determine what time the problem started. Comparing the time when problems began to recent events or changes may help establish the source of the problem.
If recent events are not the source of the problem, ask around in person or on the discussion mailing list to get help.
