=== ”’01-23-16:  The state of the machine is uncertain.  Looks like it needs some work, plus it has a very small print bed.  Good machine for tinkering.”’ ===

=== Software ===

 You need two pieces of software to run:

#Pronterface/printrun – this controls the printer, and sends g-code to it. Installation instructions for Linux/Mac/Windows [http://reprap.org/wiki/Printrun are here] (Potential alternatives, not yet tested by dave: [http://replicat.org/ ReplicatorG], [http://reprap.org/wiki/Repetier-Host Repetier-Host])
#Slic3r – this generates gcode from 3d models. Printrun includes a copy of this (at least the windows version), but it’s pretty old. [http://slic3r.org/download Go to the official site] to get the latest and greatest. Some setting changes in pronterface are needed to integrate it, so I’ve just been running it manually and exporting gcode, then loading the gcode into pronterface.

=== Slic3r Settings ===

(testing the bits in parentheses, will edit once they’re verified)

(Firmware Type: RepRap (Marlin/Sprinter))

Bed Size: 140mm x 140mm

Nozzle size: 0.35mm

Filament size 1.79mm measured (1.75mm filament) — for PLA

(Extrusion Temperature: 180 — for PLA)

Extrusion multiplier: Try 1.05 instead of 1?

Speeds: Can be increased, the defaults produce good stable quality output, but are a bit slow. Try turning up perimeter to 45 (from 30), and infill to 120 (from 60)

=== WARNING ===

Make sure the fan is always on, and don’t run the extruder too hot! Should never go over 185 for PLA (the red stuff that’s in the machine as of writing this article). I use 185 for first layer and 180 for the rest of the layers.

=== Things you should know: ===

Loading models, putting multiple into a single plate

Adjusting layer height, print speed, infill, # of perimeters, # of solid layers

Adjusting start position / initial g-code

Applying blue tape

Positioning print head, Zeroing out z-axis

Removing objects from blue tape

1. Set camera to play mode (while off)

2. Turn on camera

3. Go into menu, "firm update", say OK. camera reboots into CHDK

4. Make sure usb cable is connected as in [http://www.flickr.com/photos/acemonstertoys/8319565139/in/datetaken/ this picture]

5. Put the camera in macro mode, aim it where you want it, take a test picture

6. Put this at both the beginning of ‘end gcode’ and ‘Layer Change G-code’ under printer settings -> custom gcode
